MY AREA OF WORK

My tasks include organising maintenance and repair appointments and carrying them out. In the high-bay warehouse, for example, I replace defective components such as light barriers or brackets. When moving the pallets, goods can fall down from time to time, which causes disruptions in the operational processes. We rectify these disruptions immediately so that the racking vehicles can continue working immediately after a short synchronisation. Our team is also responsible for the electrical maintenance and servicing of all the company’s mobile equipment, such as the lifting devices for rolling containers and pallets in the various departments, the adjustable desks and the IT equipment such as monitors and PCs. We are also responsible for the entire building technology, i.e. the lighting, ventilation and air conditioning of the buildings, as well as the fire extinguishing systems and lift systems. The huge variety of technology and the opportunity to learn more about it all in training courses is what makes the work in my area so interesting.

You always get a friendly “hello” in the corridor here. Despite the size of the company, people are still on friendly, personal terms.

NO TWO DAYS ARE EVER THE SAME!

As part of my interview at Ernsting’s family we went on a site tour and visited the high-bay warehouse. I was so impressed that I didn’t hesitate for a second when I received my acceptance letter two weeks later. I currently spend a lot of time working in the high-bay warehouse. Whenever errors or malfunctions occur in the huge system, we are responsible for rectifying them. These might be errors that happen when reading the bar codes, or when the pallets aren’t recognised correctly every now and then and are lost. We are also responsible for the ventilation, lighting and other technical systems in the facility. In my role, I help keep all the facilities in good shape together with my colleagues in my department and we also work on improving the processes so that there are as few disruptions as possible. This means that no two working days are ever the same. The fact that the company is growing so fast means that there are always new things for us to do, which makes my apprenticeship as an Electronics Technician for Operating Technology particularly varied.
