WHY YOU SHOULD START AN APPRENTICESHIP AT ERNSTING’S FAMILY...

THE GOOD THING ABOUT ERNSTING’S FAMILY IS THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS RELY ON YOUR COLLEAGUES. YOU ARE WELCOME TO ASK QUESTIONS AT ANY TIME AND EVERYONE HELPS EACH OTHER OUT.

Eric, started as an apprentice, now an Electronics Technician for Operating Technology

NO TWO DAYS ARE EVER THE SAME!

As part of my interview at Ernsting’s family we went on a site tour and visited the high-bay warehouse. I was so impressed that I didn’t hesitate for a second when I received my acceptance letter two weeks later. I currently spend a lot of time working in the high-bay warehouse. Whenever errors or malfunctions occur in the huge system, we are responsible for rectifying them. These might be errors that happen when reading the bar codes, or when the pallets aren’t recognised correctly every now and then and are lost. We are also responsible for the ventilation, lighting and other technical systems in the facility. As part of my role, I help keep all the facilities in good shape together with my colleagues in my department, and we also work on improving the processes so that there are as few disruptions as possible. This means that no two working days are ever the same. The fact that the company is growing so fast means that there are always new things for us to do, which makes my apprenticeship as an Electronics Technician for Operating Technology particularly varied.

TEAMWORK AND FUN!

The good thing about Ernsting’s family is that you can always rely on your colleagues. We talk to each other as equals, help each other out and are welcome to ask questions at any time. All these things are par for the course here. In my department, we almost always work as a team, and things are also relaxed and informal with the colleagues from other areas. Working here is really fun!

I WAS ABLE TO SHAPE MY APPRENTICESHIP BY EXPRESSING MY WISHES AND SETTING MY OWN PRIORITIES.

HOW I JOINED ERNSTING’S FAMILY

I visited Ernsting’s family in Coesfeld-Lette for the first time as part of the “Project Future” business open day. That was in 2016. At the time I was extremely surprised at how large, open and friendly the company head office is – I had no idea that it would be like that! After that, I decided that I definitely wanted to apply for an apprenticeship at Ernsting’s family.

SHAPING YOUR APPRENTICESHIP AND SETTING PRIORITIES

Before my current role in Digital Business, I completed an apprenticeship as a Wholesale and Export Retail Specialist at Ernsting’s family. Every apprentice gets to work in a variety of different areas during their apprenticeship. The best thing though, is that we can shape our apprenticeship and set our own priorities. I quickly decided that I wanted to focus on Digital Business, as the work in this area is exceptionally varied, very interesting and constantly changing. New and varied tasks for digital projects each day and daily business in which you take responsibility – it certainly proved to be an interesting challenge for me! After I was able to shorten my apprenticeship to two and a half years, I started working as an Assistant for Web Analytics.

For me, it was really special to be able to complete an apprenticeship at Ernsting’s family. After all, your personal opinion counts here and is valued – right from the start. Another highlight of the apprenticeship was our team-building events, where you can get to know the other apprentices better and make plenty of new friends.

MY TASKS IN DIGITAL BUSINESS

My everyday work in the field of Digital Business focusing on Data Analytics includes carrying out web analytics using key performance indicators. By tracking these key performance indicators, we are able to gain insights into what interests our customers and identify areas of potential so as to better meet the needs of our customers. We then use this information to derive recommendations for action and respond to them as quickly as possible. We compile reports every month and discuss them at our fixed monthly team meeting. This allows us to work closely with all the different teams and always stay up to date. We create cross-departmental dashboards with the Logistics, Planning and Control, IT and Marketing departments to identify potential for optimisations and to monitor trends and developments over time. A uniform data system allows us to get to know our customers even better, and by analysing and segmenting the data that we gain, to respond to their needs even more accurately with our marketing tools.

I find the company culture here really special, and everyone is open and friendly.

INDIVIDUAL CAREER SUPPORT

At Ernsting’s family, you aren’t just supported in your career with varied opportunities for further training. After completing my apprenticeship, I decided I wanted to study for a university degree, which I was able to talk about openly. Together with the HR department, we came up with several plans that would allow me to both study and work at the same time. Therefore, since September 2019, I have been studying for a degree in Business Administration and Business Psychology while continuing to work in my Digital Business role.

IT'S GREAT TO BE ABLE TO TAKE ON USEFUL TASKS SO QUICKLY AND THEREFORE SUPPORT THE TEAM.

Max, started as an apprentice as an IT Specialist for System Integration, now a Junior Software Engineer in Logistics

AN INFORMAL JOB INTERVIEW

After completing an apprenticeship as an IT Specialist for Application Development at a different company after graduating from high school, I was attracted by the idea of getting to know the field of system integration better in another apprenticeship. I quickly decided I would like to work at Ernsting’s family. My cousin had completed an apprenticeship in IT at Ernsting’s family a few years ago and encouraged me to apply. At the job interview, I immediately discovered why. Instead of a traditional interview, we had an informal discussion during which we were able to get to know each other better in a small group.

I got the impression that it’s people who count here – we barely even discussed qualifications or grades.

USEFUL TASKS – RIGHT FROM THE START

As an apprentice, I was involved in the productive work of the company right from the start. My colleagues started by explaining and showing me the simpler tasks, before I was then allowed to advance to more complex work processes. In the area of “Service” in particular, I was able to complete smaller tasks on my own relatively quickly. It’s great to be able to take on useful tasks so quickly and support the team. I was never stuck with a fixed set of activities.

PERSONAL DISCUSSIONS

Whether it’s on the phone, in person or via chat – our colleagues are always grateful and appreciate our help with technical questions. I have never seen anyone here blame us when the systems go down. Regardless of the department they are with, discussions are relaxed and friendly and efforts are appreciated – even if our first attempt does not always lead to a solution straight away.

What continues to inspire me every day is the pleasant atmosphere and the personal discussions. This starts in the morning when you greet the team at the reception. And people say hello to each other and often stop for a quick chat during lunch breaks, when getting coffee or even when walking past your desk. I have to say that I feel as though I’m in good hands here.

DURING YOUR APPRENTICESHIP, YOU CAN EXPERIENCE WORK IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT AREAS. THIS WAY, A KIND OF PUZZLE IS PUT TOGETHER AND YOU UNDERSTAND THE COMPANY AND ITS PROCESSES BETTER.

Henrike, started as an apprentice Wholesale and Export Retail Specialist, now an Assistant Manager in Learning and Development

IN SEARCH OF THE RIGHT APPRENTICESHIP ...

After completing two internships, one as a Tailor and another as an Industrial Clerk, I decided that a combination of both would be ideal for me. Then when we went to the business open day at Ernsting’s family with school, I discovered that their apprenticeship in Wholesale and Export Retail would offer me this combination. I decided to apply for the apprenticeship, had a really pleasant interview and received my acceptance letter quite soon afterwards.

MY DEVELOPMENT IN THE COMPANY

I started by being assigned to a store and the reception, which gave me the chance to get to know the company really well. After that, I helped with the daily operations in Digital Business, got more familiar with various projects and experienced the go-live of the new online shop. I enjoyed working in that area so much that I asked if I would be able to work there again so that I could learn more about other tasks in the field. And luckily for me, I was able to do so. I was also given the opportunity to get to know our Purchasing, Human Resources, Import and Invoice Processing, Financial Accounting and Logistics departments.

During your apprenticeship, you gain an insight into several different areas. This way, a kind of puzzle is put together, and you understand the company and its processes better.

MY FOCUS

The regular feedback meetings when changing departments made it easier for me to choose my area of focus in the third year of my apprenticeship. I spent that year in the Learning and Development team in the Human Resources department. Here I was able to work on a variety of smaller projects, which allowed me to take on more and more responsibility. At the end of my apprenticeship I was then offered a permanent role and was fortunately able to stay on in the Learning and Development team.

The culture of openness runs through the entire company. With so many changes of department during your training, I noticed that you are welcomed in every department, which means that you immediately feel at home.

You can find the school-related requirements directly on the apprenticeship information page. For some, a good secondary school leaving certificate is the minimum requirement, for others, a (technical) university entrance qualification is required.

The Learning and Development team in the Human Resources department also acts as a central coordinator for everything to do with the apprenticeships. The team will be there from your job interview to the assignment planning through to the events for apprentices, and you can contact them at any time if you have any questions.

You can only develop further with constructive feedback - this also applies to our apprenticeships. This means regular feedback sessions are an integral part of our apprenticeships.
